A Closer Look: Bare Natural Deodorants

Ahh deodorant, an item that’s often regarded as an essential for many in day to day life. The first formulation of the sweat-stopper we know today was way back in 1888, and was actually a cream that would be applied to the underarms with fingers. Over the years it went through many changes and eventually became available in several different forms, including roll-ons, sticks, sprays, and even anti-perspirants. The original recipe changed too, and over time more and more ingredients like drying alcohols and harsh preservatives were added that didn’t resemble their original predecessors at all.

As you know, we do things a little differently here at Bare Natural, and preservatives, toxins, parabens and all those other artificial doo-dads just aren’t in our wheelhouse! We made it our aim to create an all natural deodorant that really does the job to fight sweat and odours while still being kind and gentle, even on sensitive skin. After working hard to trial and test different recipes (all on very willing humans, never on animals, don’t worry!) the winning formula we have today was born. • Gentle on skin – our specially formulated recipe won’t irritate skin or cause rashes or allergic reactions. Using only clean, plant-based ingredients means sensitive underarms will feel nothing but silky, smooth and conditioned!
• Doesn’t clog pores – sweating is how the body regulates temperature. Your sweat leaves your skin through your pores and evaporates on the outside, which helps to cool you down. One of the biggest benefits of Bare Natural Deodorant is that it helps to eliminate unwanted odour while still allowing your body to sweat and cool you down!
• Stops odour naturally – it’s not sweat that causes body odour, but rather sweat combined with the bacteria that already exists on your skin. Instead of stopping your skin from sweating, our Natural Deodorant helps to neutralize the odour with naturally derived botanicals. It can also help minimize the bacteria on your skin which causes the odour in the first place!
• Good for the environment – our deodorants are made with natural, sustainable, and responsible ingredients, and are contained in 100% recyclable paper packaging! Ensuring that your underarms get the protection you need while also keeping the environment in mind.

So what do we use to make our Natural Deodorants? Many traditional deodorants today contain metals like aluminium and other chemicals that stop sweating by clogging pores, but this results in a build-up of nasties that can be harmful to skin! Our Bare Natural Deodorant range does away with alcohol and aluminium based ingredients, and instead includes only natural and skin-loving oils and minerals. Let’s go through some of the main ingredients used and why…

Diatomaceous Earth: Let’s start off with a big one; this fancy sounding ingredient is a naturally occurring fine powder which is formed from the fossilised remains of algae. It’s used in our recipe to help eliminate odour and absorb excess moisture on skin.

Coconut Oil: This super ingredient is used in many recipes here at Bare, and with good reason! For our deodorants it’s used for its’ soothing and healing properties, but also because it is antibacterial and helps to neutralise underarm odour.

Shea Butter: A super moisturising butter that’s packed with vitamins A, E and F to promote skin cell health. Shea butter is also anti fungal and antibacterial so it’s perfect for helping to stop odour!

Zinc Oxide: A natural mineral found in the Earth’s crust. It’s very effective at reducing the growth of odour producing bacteria and has been used for centuries as a deodorant.

Zinc Ricinoleate: This comes from the seeds of the castor oil plant. It’s highly effective at absorbing odour-causing molecules and trapping them, and is much less harsh on skin than sodium bicarbonate or baking soda which is found in many traditional deodorants and anti-perspirants.

Arrowroot – Arrowroot is rich with nutrients and ever so gentle on skin while helping you to stay dry by absorbing excess moisture.

Sweet Almond Oil – Used for centuries to soothe and calm skin irritation, this oil is also rich in antioxidants, anti fungal and anti inflammatory!

Vitamin E – A natural antioxidant that helps protect and heal skin, it’s also an emollient, which means it’s brilliant for moisturizing and softening.

Candalilla Wax – This vegan-friendly wax is used to soothe and soften skin while also thickening and stabilising the deodorant formula.

Transitioning to Natural Deodorant

So – you know their benefits, and you know their ingredients, but what about making the switch from traditional deodorants to natural?

Well first of all it’s important to remember that it can take between two to four weeks for your body to regulate itself after changing to a natural deodorant – stick with it!

Your sweat glands and pores will be blocked with aluminium and other chemicals after years of using traditional deodorants and they can take a few days to clear up. You may notice a slight increase in odour before levels start to subside and normalise, but don’t panic! This is due to a temporary increase in odour-causing bacteria and it won’t last forever. You may also feel a slight increase in sweat, as this is the body’s natural way of flushing out those nasty toxins. Your body will be going through a detox phase, and this can sometimes take a few weeks to settle.

A handy tip is to try washing with a Charcoal Soap during this transition phase to help speed up the process and purify those plugged up pores. Remember to wash daily and exfoliate weekly to help remove the toxins that traditional deodorants have created, and you’ll be well on your way to the natural deodorant switch!
