Essential Oil Profile: Patchouli
Often associated with the flower power era when it was embraced by the free spirited of the 60’s and 70’s for using in incense burners and as cologne. However it was usually very poor quality and not like the dark rich essential oil we use.
The essential oil comes from the patchouli herb plant which is part of the mint family, it’s extracted by steam distillation of the leaf and can be harvested several times a year.
It has a sweet woody deep aroma which is uplifting and calming.
Why use Patchouli Essential Oil in Skin Care?
Patchouli Essential Oil is very soothing and healing due to its cell regeneration ability, which means it can leave you with smooth glowing skin.
Because it is anti inflammatory and antiseptic it can be a go to for hair and scalp issues such as eczema and dermatitis which in turn can help prevent hair loss.
It’s often used to:
- Help with dandruff and itchy scalp
- Treat skin conditions such as dryness dermatitis and acne
- Ease anxiety and stress
Patchouli has been used throughout history and at one time was worth the same as gold weight for weight.
