Botanical Dyes: Soaps That Are Coloured by Nature

Hello all! Today I wanted to chat to you about something I’m really passionate about – botanical dyes. When you look at my natural soap bars, you’ll notice vibrant, earthy hues. But here’s the thing: those colours don’t come from synthetic dyes. Every shade you see is thanks to the power of plants!

The Trouble with Synthetic Colourants

Many soaps out there are made with synthetic dyes, which often contain harmful chemicals. These dyes not only impact our skin, sometimes causing irritation or allergies, but they also aren’t the best for the environment! When synthetic soaps wash down the drain, these chemicals can end up in waterways, affecting aquatic life and ecosystems.

That’s why I’ve made a conscious decision to use only botanical dyes. Nature has provided us with a rainbow of beautiful, rich colours that are not only safe for our skin but also eco-friendly. Plus, they come with added skin benefits!

Here are a few of my favourite botanical dyes and why they’ve earned a permanent spot in my soaps…

Indigo Powder: Deep, Rich Blues

Indigo powder is one of my go-to’s for creating gorgeous shades of blue. Derived from the leaves of the indigo plant, it has been used for centuries to colour textiles, but it works just as beautifully in soaps. Besides its striking colour, indigo has been linked to anti-inflammatory properties, making it a wonderful natural option for people with sensitive skin. This beautiful botanical dye is used in my Amyris and Clary Sage soap bars.

Wheatgrass Powder: Fresh, Bright Greens

When you think of wheatgrass, you probably think of healthy smoothies, but it’s also a fantastic natural dye! Wheatgrass powder provides a bright, fresh green to my soaps, adding that touch of nature. It’s rich in vitamins A, C, and E, which are great for your skin and act as natural antioxidants. I use this colourant in my Bergamot and Rosemary soap bars.

Madder Root: Warm Reds and Pinks

Madder root is one of my favourite natural dyes for creating soft pinks and deep reds. This ancient plant has been used for thousands of years for textiles, and its colouring is 100% plant-based. Not only does it add warmth and depth to my soaps, but madder root is also known for its ability to help improve skin tone. This is the main botanical dye in my Cedarwood and Amyris soap bar.

Rhassoul Clay: Earthy Browns

Rhassoul clay is a luxurious ingredient that I love using for its rich, earthy tones. This Moroccan clay has been used for centuries in skincare and is incredibly nourishing. It’s packed with minerals like silica and magnesium, making it fantastic for detoxifying and drawing out impurities from the skin. Not to mention, it leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth! My Rosewood and Rose Geranium soap bars contain rhassoul clay.

Turmeric: Golden Yellows and Earthy Tones

Turmeric isn’t just a superfood for your body – it’s also a superstar in natural skincare. Known for its vibrant yellow colour, turmeric gives my soaps a beautiful golden hue. It’s packed with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it a perfect ingredient for soothing the skin. It also gives your complexion a nice glow! I use it to give my Winter Spice soap bars their beautiful colour.

Why Nature’s Colourants are Best

When I use botanical dyes, I know I’m offering something that’s not only beautiful but also kind to your skin and the planet. There’s a richness to these colours that you just can’t get with synthetic dyes! And knowing that these ingredients are sourced straight from nature makes me feel confident that I’m giving you the best of what our Earth has to offer.

I hope this has given you a little insight into why I’m so passionate about keeping things natural at Bare Natural. Next time you pick up one of my soap bars, maybe you’ll think about the journey that each plant-based dye has taken – from the ground, to your hands!
